Our story

33 years of yellow buses and big roads

Taisto’s story began in the early 1990s with an unexpected purchase.

Company founder Tajo Salus acquired a 20-year-old Scania bus from a Swedish police auction – with a front engine and wooden seats. The bus was fitted with soft seats and Estonia’s first organised car shopping trips to the Utrecht car market in the Netherlands began.

One bus became the beginning of something much bigger.

From car business to international travel

In the 1990s, people didn’t just travel to relax – they went to improve their lives.

Taisto buses took enterprising Estonians to foreign markets, school children to Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Germany, and groups all over Europe.

More buses were bought. They kept getting better.
Neoplan became a reliable partner.

And the name Taisto was born – borrowed from co-founder Taisto-Taimo Kängseppa. Short, memorable and pronounceable in many languages.

Yellow buses that were remembered

A Finnish partner gave important advice:
The bus must be bright and beautiful – the journey starts with a good feeling.

That’s how Taisto’s buses turned yellow.
Then came the elephants and giraffes.
Võru artist Andres Vilde painted the buses by hand.

Soon, travelers abroad were taking pictures not only of the sights, but also of their own bus.
Taisto buses had character. And so did the company.

Challenges along the way

Over the course of three decades, Taisto has seen it all:
  • A passenger who was removed from a bus by German police with 500 one-krona coins that he tried to use instead of marks in vending machines.
  • An old Volvo bought at a Swedish police auction, exchanged for Astrakhan fish roe.
  • Fuel in North Africa that burned so hot that the exhaust pipe glowed red, and the bus arrived home with only four cylinders.
  • A bus war in Estonia, where Taisto offered a ticket price on the Tallinn-Tartu route more than twice as cheap as its competitors.

2008. the economic crisis and the coronavirus pandemic.
And yet – Taisto continued driving.

A family business with a heart

Today, Taisto continues to be a family business.

The company is owned by Tajo Salus’ son Juho, who has studied law – a skill that is invaluable in today’s bureaucracy. His daughter Liis, who has both an economics and law degree, also contributes to the company’s development.

The company has grown, but has maintained its personal and caring nature.

Germany, Sweden, Estonia – and more

Today, Taisto buses operate in Estonia and elsewhere in Europe.

  • Long-term cooperation partners in Germany and Sweden
  • Order shipments across Europe
  • Over 30 buses of various sizes in a modern bus fleet
  • Since 2007, the official representative of the Turkish manufacturer Temsa in the Baltics

Whether it’s transporting NATO soldiers in Estonia, international tourist groups in Germany, or transporting passengers to Swedish ports – Taisto works where precision, safety, and trust are most important.

What keeps us on track?

Tajo Salus simply says:

“Life requires a little courage, a little luck – and hard work.”

Taisto has never wanted to be the biggest.
The goal has been to be reliable, recognizable and professional.

Because in transportation, reputation moves faster than any bus.

A look into the future

Electric or hydrogen buses?
The field is changing and Taisto keeps an eye on developments.

But one thing remains the same:
a commitment to safe, professional and comfortable travel.

33 years later, the yellow buses are still on the roads.
And the journey continues.
